Chennai: Two days after sleuths from CBI booked a railway clerk from Salem for swindling the professional tax contribution of employees running into many lakhs of rupees, the central investigation agency, found in the latest case of fraud in the railways that a man from Jaipur working in the Ambur railway office had swindled the salaries of absentees and those who had resigned from service. He manipulated computer records and diverted the amounts to his and his wife's accounts, in the process misappropriating over Rs 31 lakh in the last two years.

The suspect, Anil Kumar Meena, is working as track maintainer in permanent way inspector's office of southern railway, Ambur in Vellore. Since he was well versed in computers, he was asked by the office superintendent,

Dakshinamoorthy, to help in maintaining the payroll of the employees working in the office. The salary details of employees were routinely fed into the computer at the office and the salaries then credited in the respective bank accounts in various banks. Dakshinamoorthy had given his user ID and password to Anil Kumar Meena for the purpose of transferring funds to bank accounts of employees.

Taking advantage of the situation, the suspect picked out the salary particulars of those who were absent from work for long periods and employees who had resigned and used them to transfer funds as if they were also eligible to be paid their salaries. He routed these payments into his and his wife Suman Meena's bank accounts.

Between February, 2015 and January 2017, five accounts belonging to the couple received Rs 31.67 lakh of such misappropriated sums. Both Anil Kumar Meena and Suman Meena were booked under various IPC sections for cheating criminal conspiracy and under prevention of corruption act by CBI.
