Madurai: Detained youth end protest fast
Madurai: The youths who were detained by the police in a marriage hall at Vadipatti near Madurai broke their fast after the Naam Tamilar Katchi leader Seeman and film director Ameer Sultan held talks with them for nearly four hours.
The police had detained more than 200 youths, including three girls, after they protested at Alanganallur Tuesday and moved them to three marriage halls in different locations. The youths started observing a protest fast in the places in which they were confined. Though the police released all of them, only 52 left the marriage halls in the morning. The remaining youths assembled in the marriage hall at Vadipatti and continued their fast.
Meanwhile, after Seeman and Ameer held talks with them, the youths agreed to withdraw the fast but demanded that the central government immediately pass a special law in parliament to remove the ban against jallikattu or allow five temple bulls to pass through Vadivasal at Alanganallur.
Earlier, a few among the released youths visited Alanganallur and thanked the villagers for expressing solidarity with them. However, around 40 youths were staying in the marriage hall till late evening demanding that the police allow them to meet the villagers at Alanganallur to decide the next course of action.
