Kozhikode Corporation wakes up to lapse of funds

Engg wing asked to speed up projects.

Kozhikode: Kozhikode Corporation mayor Thottahil Raveendran directed the engineering wing to ensure steps were taken to utilise the maximum plan fund. Chairing the council meeting here on Friday, the Mayor asked the engineers to complete the pending projects so that the funds would not lapse. He added that he would monitor the functioning of the engineering wing to ensure the directions were properly followed.

The Mayor was replying to the calling attention motion by Nadakkavu councillor P Kishan Chand. Kishan Chand who alleged that over Rs. 100 crores would lapse because of laxity in utilising the plan fund. The council witnessed a heated exchange between the BJP members and others over the issue of Madhya Pradesh police preventing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan from attending a programme in Bhopal.

The council also passed an adjournment motion (60-5) presented by P Anitha of the CPM condemning the Madhya Pradesh police's action. E Prasanth Kumar of the BJP said the adjournment motion was politically motivated thus registering his protest against it. The council also approved the decision to install CCTV cameras in the Corporation office in order to ensure transparency in administration. In the first phase, cameras will be installed at Janasevana Kendram, offices of Town Planning and Revenue and entrances at the front and rear of the corporation office. A total of Rs. five lakh has been allocated for the project.
