Five suicides in two days; marital discord as main reason, say police

A volunteer belonging to Shareen Nagar in Anantapur jumped to death from a five-storey building at Birla Compound

Kurnool: Suicidal tendencies among the youth are rising. In the past two days, five persons committed suicide in this district. The reasons were marital discord, rising debts, separation from spouse or mental health.

Thirty-year-old Raju of the Muzaffarnagar colony was working as a driver. He got married to Lakshmi nine years ago. Raju got addicted to drinks. The wife left him four years ago and was living with her parents. He had been pestering her to sign on divorce papers. As she refused, Raju consumed pesticide by mixing it in a cool drink and drowned in Handri river near Pandipadu. His body was fished out and a case registered.

Ganesh, a 29-year-old driver, had no children after his marriage nine years ago. His wife left for her mother's house and he was staying alone. He asked her to return to his home but she cited reasons of her mother’s sickness to stay back. An upset Ganesh committed suicide by hanging himself to the ceiling fan, police said.

The third suicide was reported from Rathna palli village in Veldurthi mandal. A 27-year-old Ayya Swamy committed suicide by hanging himself to a ceiling fan. It is said he was sinking in debts after he took three acres of land for cultivation and the field turned dry.

At Maramdoddi village in C Belagal Mandal, Naryana, a 42-year-old married man ended his life after a tiff with his wife. Police said Narayanaswamy asked his wife not to go to her parents' house for the Dasara festival. She did not heed his word. This caused heartburn and he ended his life by consuming pesticide on Saturday, police said.
