Mysuru: Clock tower falls silent after civic fathers blundered'

The heritage experts committee had listed as many as 235 heritage buildings over a decade ago.

Mysuru: Often apathetic , when they do act the heritage city's civic fathers can be sadly misguided, or so it seems.

Thanks to their "concern," the Belgian clock in the heritage clock tower near the Town Hall in the heart of Mysuru city stopped its loud chiming a few years ago.

The chime was muted without consulting Mysuru heritage experts as the Mysuru City Corporation believed the hairline cracks appearing in the building were caused by its loud sound that could be heard in places within a radius of 5kms.

But a member of the Mysuru Heritage Experts Committee, N S Rangaraju dismisses the theory, saying the cracks in the building are not caused by the loud chiming of the Belgium clock, and put the blame on its weight.

“It can be conserved by wall stitching or placing a clamp covered with mortar around it,” he explains. Is anyone listening?

The heritage experts committee had listed as many as 235 heritage buildings over a decade ago and a list of 201 was sent to the government for declaring as heritage structures and conserving. But no action has been taken as yet.
