No headway in Shamna Tasnim probe

The student community and parents of Shamna are concerned with the state of affairs.

KOCHI: A month after the death of Shamna Tasnim, 21-year-old MBBS student of Ernakulam Government Medical College (EMC), the two parallel probes into the alleged medical negligence leading to her death have so far produced no results. It was on July 18 that Shamna died, collapsing after an antibiotic injection was administered on her. She had come to the EMC with fever and there was an allegation that after she collapsed, there was a delay of 20 minutes in taking her to the ICU and giving the adrenaline injection to resuscitate her.

The medical board at the district level comprising the City Police Commissioner and the District Medical Officer is yet to look into the issue. The Commissioner M P Dinesh and the Assistant Police Commissioner (Thrikkakara) Binoy M probing the case say that the medical board can deal with the matter only after they receive the post-mortem report. Forensic experts had said that the police need not wait for the final post mortem report to go ahead with the probe.

It is learnt that the final post-mortem report is ready after the virology and histopathological test results and police will collect it from the Alappuzha Medical College Forensic Department in two or three days. The probe ordered by the State Government which is headed by Joint Director of Medical Education Dr K Sreekumari is also dragging.

The other two members Dr M K Suresh and Dr K Anitha are also in Thiruvananthapuram and it is learnt that they are yet to sit together even once to discuss the matter after collecting evidence at the medical college on July 25. The student community and parents of Shamna are concerned with the state of affairs.
