Phones Banned in Kedarnath

DEHRADUN: The management committee of the Kedarnath Temple has imposed a ban on the use of mobile phones for photography and videography within the temple premises. This decision comes in response to several videos that went viral on social media, drawing criticism from the priest community and devotees. Additionally, the committee has requested devotees to dress modestly and preferably in traditional Indian attire when visiting the temple.

The Badri-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), under the Uttarakhand government, has not only prohibited photography and videography but has also warned of legal action against individuals found carrying mobile phones on the temple campus. The committee has further instructed visitors not to raise tents or set up camps in the temple area, as any violations of these rules may lead to legal consequences.

Within the temple premises, warning and caution boards have been placed in various locations, clearly stating, "Do not enter the temple with mobile phones. Photography and videography are banned here. You are under the surveillance of CCTV cameras. Legal action will be taken against those caught shooting pictures and videos in the temple."

Speaking to this newspaper, BKTC chairman Ajayendra Ajay explained that the committee was compelled to make this decision due to the inappropriate behaviour of some individuals, which goes against the traditions and honour of the Kedarnath temple. He emphasised that visitors should maintain proper conduct. Those found guilty of violating the order will face prosecution, and their mobile phones will be confiscated by the police. Ajay further mentioned that the committee has requested the state government's permission to construct a cloakroom where pilgrims can safely store their mobile phones and other electronic gadgets. In the future, the committee plans to ban all electronic devices within the temple area.

When asked if a similar decision is anticipated for the Badrinath Shrine, the BKTC head stated, "The situation is not as severe in Badrinath as it is in Kedarnath, but warning boards will also be put up there if necessary. The order will be replicated if needed. This is a religious place where people come with great faith. Devotees should respect the sanctity of this holy place."

Recently, a video went viral in which a woman proposed to her boyfriend in front of the Kedarnath temple. The couple was seen first worshipping at the temple before the man presented a ring box to the woman, who then proposed to him while kneeling. The woman, identified as Vishakha on her blog page, shared the video and expressed her joy, saying, "It finally came true after extensive planning. I proposed to him at an altitude of 11,750 feet above sea level at the Kedarnath temple. This place is truly mystical. He finally accepted the proposal with the blessings of Bholenath (Lord Shiva). I can't express my happiness in words."

In a previous incident, another video went viral in which a woman devotee was seen showering notes on the Shivling in the temple's sanctum sanctorum. This act received widespread condemnation from the local priest community and devotees, prompting the BKTC to file a complaint. An FIR was subsequently registered against the woman.
