Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital casualty wing cries for intensive care
KOZHIKODE: The casualty wing of the Government Medical College Hospital here is reeling under gross negligence when the number of admissions is spiralling due to the fever epidemic. Though the casualty wing is functioning in a cramped space, the non-functioning of air conditioners has made the matter worse now. “It was in last March six air conditioners were installed spending Rs 44 lakh. Now, none works for inadequate power supply,” says a junior doctor. The soaring heat had invited the wrath of the junior doctors and PG students on duty.
Medicine, ortho and surgery wings are functioning here in a short space, and the available ventilation was closed after the installation of air conditioners. Due to the fever and the frequent accidents in monsoon, the number of cases reaching in casualty has hit a record. “Along with the air conditioning work, new electrical wiring and other maintenance works were carried out last year. But it has been defunct now. We will look into the matter,” told KMCH authorities.
Temporarily, fans are taken on rent from outside to beat the heat. Besides the rush to the casualty wing, umpteen persons will visit the blood bank in the building to donate blood. “We pin all our hopes on the major renovation works under Rs 150 crore estimated Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). Then the space crunch issue would be permanently solved,” an official said.
