TN CPI against Kerala's stand on Mullaiperiyar
Chennai: A day after DMK chief M. Karunanidhi asked the Left parties to come out with their stand on Kerala Chief Minister’s assertion to build a new dam in place of the existing Mullaiperiyar dam, CPI Tamil Nadu unit clarified that the views of Kerela Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was not acceptable to it.
However, the Tamil Nadu CPI unit maintained a conspicuous silence on the issue. The party said that the Kerala government's stand would affect the relationship between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, besides creating tension. The Supreme Court verdict on the Mullaiperiyar issue should be implemented and the the relationship between the two States should be protected, Tamil Nadu Farmers Union general secretary V. Duraimanickam said in a statement here.
He said Pinarayi Vijayan immediately after he took over as Chief Minister said he did not believe in the policy of building a new dam instead of the existing Mullaiperiyar dam. The Kerala Chief Minister also stated that his government accepted the report of the expert committee appointed by the Supreme Court that the Mullaiperiyar dam is strong. The CPI welcomed the first statement. But, Pinarayi Vijayan reversed his stand and it was regrettable, Duraimanickam said.
