Skilled hands needed for Indian textile sector
Chennai: With Indian textile market slated to go up to 223 billion US dollars in 2020, trained people would be needed to facilitate the growth, said Chancellor of VIT University, Dr G. Viswanathan during the inauguration event of VIT Fashion Institute of Technology (V-FIT) and an academic Block-II at the VIT Chennai Campus on Saturday. Presiding over the inaugural function, he said that the textile sector accounts for 11 per cent of Indian exports.
“The nation's market, currently at 108 billion US dollars, is expected to grow drastically. So there is a need for special programmes to meet the textile industry and customer requirements. Textile sector would need 61 million trained personnel in the textile sector in 2022,” he added.
Dr Viswanathan said the country should give a stiff competition to China in manufacturing sector. “Since India has a great diversity in terms of weaving and textile materials, it is very appropriate that the VIT has launched V-FIT,” he said.
Inaugurating V-FIT, P. Mohammed Ali, Founder, Galfar Engineering and Construction Company, Oman asked the students to uphold Indian tradition while creating new designs.
Dr Anita Mabel Manohar, Director, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Chennai, said it is an opportunity to take Tamil Nadu culture to global level. Sriramulu Balakrishnan, Managing Director, KG Denim Ltd, Coimbatore gave away cash prizes on behalf of VIT to the Plus Two toppers in six weaver families of Kanchepuram district.
