Kurnool administration identifies land for national law university

KURNOOL: The district administration has selected a site in Lakshmipuram in Kallur mandal for setting up the proposed National Law University in the district.
The state government decided in February last to establish a new law university. Currently, there are 25 national law universities and this would be the second in the state in addition to the existing Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University (DSNLU) in Visakhapatnam.

Admissions to these institutions are based on rankings obtained through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), a national-level entrance exam for undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes offered by national law universities. CLAT is held by the consortium of national law universities. Several affiliate universities utilise CLAT scores for admissions and recruitment.

Joint collector Narapureddy Mourya has confirmed the identification of 50 acres of land in Lakshmipuram. Proposals are being submitted to the state government for a final decision.

She said the state government would consider allocation of funds for infrastructure. The proposed site is close to the city limits and would jell well with the proposed high court and other legal institutions.

The AP University of Law was established in 2009 and it was later renamed Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University in 2012. The university offers admissions based on CLAT scores and provides BA LLB (Hons), LLM, PhD and LLD programmes.
A couple of years ago, the state finance minister disclosed that some 250 acres of land at Jagannatha Gattu was likely to be allocated for the high court. But, the land acquisition has not yet taken place.
