Erode: Dressed in dazzling bridal silks and wearing a colourful garland, Indumathi Prabhakaran arrived at the polling booth in Gobichettipalayam on Monday morning. Indumathi and her newly-wed groom, P..Prabhakaran had rushed straight from their wedding in Avinashi to the polling booth at Gobichettipalayam to cast their vote and carry out their democratic duty. Not just Indumathi and Prabhakaran, there were three newly-wed couples in Gobichettipalayam constituency who headed for the polling booths just minutes after their marriage.
The eight-time Gobi MLA and former AIADMK Minister, K.A. Sengottaiyan is contesting again in Gobichettipalayam constituency. A photographer by profession, 24 year old Prabhakaran and 21 year old Indumathi tied the nuptial knot on Monday morning at Lingeswararar temple in Avinashi. Within an hour after the wedding, the newly-wed drove for over 50 kms to the polling booth at Sengodappa primary school in Gobichettipalayam.
The voters and polling officials were quite surprised to see the newly-wed couple arrive in their wedding robes and garlands.
“Both of us are voting for the first time. We felt that we should not miss voting and do our democratic duty. So, we decided to come all the way to Gobi and cast our vote,” smiled Prabhakaran, showing his booth slip. And his newly-wed wife coyly nodded.
Another couple, 25-year-old Krithiga and Navaneethakrishan, who got married on Monday morning in Gobi, wasted no time and headed for the polling booth at Karattadipalayam in Gobichettipalayam constituency.
“The Election Commission campaign for 100 per cent polling inspired us,” said the couple, who wore the garlands and were clad in their wedding silks.
Yet another couple, 32-year-old S.Saravanan, a businessman and 25-year- old M. Indumathi, a postgraduate teacher, walked into the polling booth at Vairavizha High School in Gobi, just an hour after their wedding at the Kondathukaliamman temple in Boriyur near Gobi.
After getting their fingers inked, they went back to the marriage hall to shake hands with the wedding guests. “We did not want to fail in our democratic duty even on our wedding,” the couple smiled.
