Sure of Tumakuru, not of JD(S) seats, says H.D. Deve Gowda

While he claimed he was confident of defeating former MP, G.S. Basavaraju of the BJP from Tumakuru despite being on new turf in the constituency.

Tumakuru: Janata Dal (Secular) supremo, H.D. Deve Gowda, admitted on Tuesday that he was not sure how many seats his party would win in Karnataka these Lok Sabha polls.

While he claimed he was confident of defeating former MP, G.S. Basavaraju of the BJP from Tumakuru despite being on new turf in the constituency, he candidly admitted in response to a question on the JD(S)’s chances in the state, “I don’t know which seats the party will win.”

Mr Gowda, who was speaking to reporters here, said although he was new to Tumakuru, he was well known in the constituency and this could help his chances. As for the emerging scene at the national level following the Lok Sabha poll, he once again injected an element of uncertainty, saying he wasn’t sure how things would pan out.

“If Congress president, Rahul Gandhi’s government is installed at the Centre then it will be easy for me to get things done for Tumakuru. Even otherwise I am capable of achieving things,” he assured.

Observing that the people of Tumakuru were poor and its coconut growers were suffering in the absence of adequate rainfall, he promised to work in close association with Deputy Chief Minister, Dr G Parameshwar, who represents the Koratagere assembly segment in the constituency, to resolve their problems.

Dr Parameshwar, who was also present at the press conference, said that if Mr Gowda was elected to Parliament, he was bound to address the water problem of the district and work to solve it.
