Chennai: Looks like fresh trouble is brewing for Tamil Nadu-cadre IPS officer R.V. Varun Kumar, who is back in service after suspension following arrest for alleged dowry harassment.
While only Tamil Nadu police and Delhi police had registered FIRs against him, queries about the case are coming from home ministry. Also, National Commission for Women (NCW) and Delhi Commission for Women have decided to look into the complaint of Priyadarshini, the woman who is fighting a battle against her friend-turned-foe Varun Kumar.
In February this year, the NCW had written to Delhi commission for women asking it to look into Priyadarshini’s petition in which she had highlighted the right to live with dignity.
Despite various enquiries from home ministry and CM’s cell, the Tamil Nadu police are still not sure about how to proceed with the case further.
The DGP in a letter to Priyadarshini last month said he was waiting for certain remarks from Chennai police commissioner, before replying. “We are also yet to receive the RTI reply from Chief secretary. The RTI questions were sent to the Chief Secretary in November last year through the union home ministry,” said Priyadarshini on Saturday pointing out that government and police machinery are more sympathetic towards the tainted IPS officer than his victim.
It may be noted New Delhi police had in February registered a case against Varun Kumar for criminal intimidation and intention to insult the modesty of a woman after allegedly sending goons to Delhi to threaten his ex-girl friend Priyadarshini who is fighting a case of dowry harassment against him.
Varun Kumar, arrested in connection with alleged demand for dowry from Priyadarshini, was suspended in 2014 and was re-posted as assistant superintendent of police of Tamil Nadu commando force in January this year. The government decided to give him the posting after the Central administrative tribunal set aside his suspension and he also obtained a stay on trial of his case.
As the case is going on for the last five years, Varun Kumar had married another IPS officer from Tamil Nadu cadre while Priyadarshini married a lawyer from Delhi and settled there.
