Kozhikode police to teach self-defence techniques
Kozhikode: A permanent training centre to teach self-defence techniques in the wake of increasing assaults on women is ready to open at Edachery on Saturday. “Self-defence classes to women groups should be provided here by women police personnel. They will take physical as well as verbal classes,” said Vadakara women cell inspector Banumathy. The training programmes held at various educational institutions last year was a big success, inspiring them to set up a permanent facility.
“Close to 10,000 girls were provided with 20-hour classes. The feedback we got was overwhelming,” she said. The classes will focus on the body language and tips to tackle situations in buses, ATMs and secluded places at odd hours, including chain snatching. The martial lessons are a combination of Karate and Kung Fu. “The important lesson is to have a fearless body language even at odd situations,” said Kozhikode Rural SP, M.K. Pushkaran.
Eight women civil police officers underwent training in this regard in Thiruvananthapuram, and they are imparting lessons now. Girl students of the educational institutions in Vadakara, Koyilandy, Perambra and Mukkam had already received training. “The training had given me a new vigour. Though we knew the resistance steps informally, the scientific lessons will give a fillip to our self-esteem,” said Sreya M. of Koyilandy.
