Kochi in climate initiative
KOCHI: Kochi has been selected as one of the 100 cities for the 'Mobilise Your City (MYC)' programme, a global climate initiative for integrated urban mobility planning, and one of the international transport initiatives of the UN Global Climate Action Agenda (GCAA). Two other cities from the country, Nagpur and Ahmedabad, have also been selected for the programme. The MYC programme includes a technical assistance of 3.5 Million-Euro for the three selected cities, delegated to French funding agency AFD. MYC would assist in implementing low carbon transit solutions with a project-based approach at the city level, and policy-based strategies at the national level.
Under the MYC initiatives, two technical resources will be positioned at the MYC cell at Ministry of Urban Development and one in each selected city. Mayor Soumini Jain and Kochi Metro Rail Limited MD Elias George received the MYC Membership Certificate on Thursday from Ms. Annie GUILLEMOT, senator, president of SYTRAL, the Unified Transport Authority of the City of Lyon, France.
The initiative is implemented by its founding partner agencies like ADEME, AFD, CEREMA, CODATU and GIZ.
The City Corporation had submitted the application for MYC in November 2016, with KMRL as the supporting technical expert. The MYC steering committee was officially intimated about the selection of the city in December 2016. The MoUD and the State Government are in the process of getting the bilateral agreement signed between the Department of Economic Affairs and AFD by the month-end. The MYC aims at providing solutions in a fully integrated manner, analysing different modes of transportation within the urban fabric with the objective of providing its inhabitants with long-term, sustainable, adequate, reliable and cost-effective transportation opportunities.
