Inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on Kallayi-Cheruvathur electrified line will take place on March 22.

KOZHIKODE: Inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) on Kallayi-Cheruvathur electrified line will take place on March 22. This was confirmed after the successful trial run on the route using a tower wagon fitted with electric engine on Wednesday.

In Shornur-Mangalore stretch, the electrification up to Kallayi has been completed and goods train are reaching up to Kallayi whereas passenger trains change to diesel engine at Shornur.

In the stretch, there are four sub-stations, viz., Tirur, Elathur, Kannur South and Cheruvathur. Of this, only the work at Kannur South has been completed so far. Railway sources said that the power up to Farook would be supplied from Shornur sub-station and the rest from Kannur South. A power of 25 KV is being supplied through the line from Sunday itself.

On Wednesday, the trial run started from Kallayi at 10 am and reached Cheruvathur at 1.40 pm. The return trip left Cheruvathur at 2.10 and reached Kallayi at 6.05 pm. Railway Deputy Chief Electrical Engineers of Kozhikode, Kannur, Palakkad division senior divisional electrical engineer (Traction) among others travelled in the trial run.

It may be recalled that then CRS, S.K. Mittal who inspected the Shornur-Kozhikode line on March 30, 2015, denied permission on Kallai-Kozhikode stretch pointing that the height of the Rail-over-bridge at Kozhikode station is 7 cm less than the stipulated measurement.
