Students go on strike against harassment of girls; police registers case.

THRISSUR: The Pavaratty police in Thrissur district on Thursday has registered a case against the Mother Arts and Science College at Poovathur for emotional harassment of girl students. The case was registered based on a complaint by a group of girl students, they said. The students, who boycotted the classes on Thursday, are also planning to move the Kerala State Human Rights Commission on Friday. One of the complainants who declined to reveal her identity said, “We have lodged a complaint with the police on emotional harassment as police stated that issues of lack of facilities and unhygienic food in the hostel do not come under their power.”
"We will raise them before the HRC," she added. The draft of the petition to the HRC signed by nine girls listed out harassment suffered by them during their stay there till December 2015. The quality of the water supplied in the hostel was so unhygienic that students suffered vaginal and mouth infections. The hostel authorities also used to ask embarrassing questions about personal habits and purpose of using personal gadgets. They also read out the content of a diary of a student in public. The students alleged that Abdul Salim, principal-in-charge, was responsible for these activities and should be removed from the position. Al-Nazar Trust promotes the college.
