More Heavy Rains Expected in TN
Chennai: Heavy rains that lashed several districts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday would continue for another two more days in isolated places as a low pressure has been formed over south east Bay of Bengal under the influence to the upper air cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Nicobar islands and adjoining areas of Andaman sea.
As per the prediction of the Indian Meteorological Department, the districts where heavy rains were expected in isolated places are Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Cuddalore.
The Bay of Bengal turned tumultuous with waves raising to two to three metres due to the overturning circulation and fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea, while Minister for Disaster Management K K S S R Ramachandran said that all precautionary measures had been taken to protect the people and prevent damage to property.
The entire Tamil Nadu Disaster Relief Force (TNDRF) comprising 986 personnel forming 18 teams was in preparedness with 170 appliances to embark on any operation at any moment. Of the 18 teams, 12 have been stationed in the coastal regions and six are at the headquarters in Avadi.
Police department has also been put on high alert all over the State, particularly in the areas that have been witnessing heavy rains, and keeping a watch over raising water levels in dams and reservoirs even as the round-the-clock emergency centres under the ADGP- operations were kept functional to take any emergency calls.
Apart from the police, the revenue department was also on high alert, watching over the situation as incessant rains continued to lash many areas even as orange and yellow alerts had been issued in many districts, where normal life has been disrupted following the rains.
Many schools were declared holidays as the rains continued to lash unabated even in Chennai and some adjoining districts. However, Chennai did not witness much water logging, though the reservoirs started filling up.
