Chennai: Strongly opposing the centre’s condition of applying indelible ink on the fingers of people who had exchanged notes in a bank once, DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin on Tuesday appealed to the centre to simplify the procedures for money exchange.
People are unable to exchange their notes even for their essential needs and the centre should alleviate their sufferings, he said. Accusing the centre of resorting to an undeclared emergency in the country, Stalin said subjecting the poor people to misery is condemnable.
Initially, everyone welcomed it believing that the Prime Minister would have kept in place alternate arrangements, but the subsequent developments had shown that the centre had taken a policy decision without any alternate arrangements.
People are not able to withdraw their money from several ATMs and the few ATMs that dispensed money had long queues from early morning. People are spending their time in queues without attending to their job, in fear of not having money to buy rice and milk, he said.
Applying indelible ink for exchanging cash is not acceptable in a democracy, he said and recalled that the BJP had come to power promising a government for the people.
