Kozhikode Corporation to harvest rain water

This direction was prompted by an adjournment motion moved in the council by Kolathara councillor Mullaveettil Moideen

KOZHIKODE: The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation has decided to take measures to tackle the drought by installing rainwater harvesting units in the city limits and to repair the existing facilities. Mayor Thottathil Raveendran said that the ombudsman for local self government institutions had also issued an order directing the civic body to take these steps on the basis of a petition filed by Dr C. Balakrishnan Nair.

The Mayor directed the public works standing committee chairperson T.V. Lalitha Prabha and education standing committee chairman M. Radhakrishnan Master to take steps to execute rainwater harvesting and to see that those set up at schools which had become defunct were made operational. The Mayor also directed the councillors to submit the list of two spots in their wards to set up kiosks to distribute drinking water so that the lists could be forwarded to the district administration.

This direction was prompted by an adjournment motion moved in the council by Kolathara councillor Mullaveettil Moideen urging the civic body to take steps to set up rainwater harvesting in all establishments, houses and at schools. The council meeting also discussed a joint adjournment motion moved in the council by Nambidi Narayanan of BJP, K.K. Rafeek of CPM and Adv P. M. Suresh Kumar of UDF on the issue of demonetisation.
