Tamil Nadu government staff on mat for cheating with notes

State-run Tasmac liquor outlets are in trouble, facing memos for accepting demonetised currencies.

Chennai: A week after the demonetisation announcement by Prime Minister Modi, there was a ripple effect among the errant government staff and a section of them associated with Hindu Religious Endowment Charities and state-run Tasmac liquor outlets are in trouble, facing memos for accepting demonetised currencies.

Tasmac salesmen who had been accepting demonetised currencies in the state-run liquor outlets were identified and were being issued charge-memos. About 20 shops across the city were identified as having accepted the scrapped currencies beyond November 9, a highly placed source told DC adding that the Tasmac authorities have now raked the issue in all 31 TN districts covering 6,323 liquor outlets.

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department also cautioned the temple authorities against the backdrop of demonetisation with a stern direction, insisting that staff deposit the collections from the hundials only in the respective bank accounts of the temples and not to barter the withdrawn notes for smaller denominations.

Meanwhile, the banks began focussing on account holders giving preference to them and making the token system compulsory for those who want to exchange currency. Unlike ATMs in Delhi dispersing new notes, ATMs in TN dispersed only the old Rs 100 notes along with new Rs 2,000 currency till Tuesday night.
