Calicut University aims for total residential setup

Edu minister opens new hostel floor.

THENJIPPALAM: The Calicut University is planning a complete residential campus by providing all students with accommodation facilities in the coming years. The university, which would begin its golden jubilee celebrations soon, will offer hostel facilities to all girl students in the next one year and gradually to all other students. The lack of amenities in the hostels had resulted in a series of protests in the recent past.

A total of 2,500 students are studying in the 35 departments of the university. Among them, 1,600 are girl students out of which 1,200 are provided with hostel facilities. With the opening of the new building, the university will be able to provide accommodation to all girl students.

The first floor of the new hostel block ‘Everest’ which was inaugurated by Education Minister Prof C. Raveendranath on Saturday, can accommodate 138 students. The building was constructed using Rs 4.71 crore from the state plan fund. The hostel has 58 rooms, a multipurpose hall, reading room etc and has a total area of 2,752.73 square metres. The university hopes to complete the final phase of the building by next fiscal year.

“Two-thirds of the total girl students are already staying in the university hostels. We will improve the facilities so that all students can have a trouble-free stay on the campus,” said Vice- Chancellor Dr K. Mohammed Basheer.
