VIJAYAWADA: The Taxpayers’ Association has filed a petition in the AP High Court against the new property tax system based on capital value as against the present system of annual rent value.
The association president Sambi Reddy and secretary Anjaneyulu, as also the AP Urban Citizens Forum state convener Babu Rao deplored the “merciless” manner in which the state government is imposing additional burden on the people amid the Corona crisis. “Political parties and organisations had staged protests but in vain, and hence we filed a petition in the HC seeking justice,” they said at a press conference here on Thursday.
They said the Taxpayers 'Association filed the writ petition on May 14 through the state bar council member Sunkara Rajendraprasad and another lawyer Narra Srinivas. The value of capital becomes real only when it is sold, they said.
“Also, it is not possible for everyone to come to the corporation office and submit objections while the Covid rules are in force.”
The leaders said that while there were 2,17,141 property tax assessments and 13,229 vacant land tax assessments in Vijayawada city, only 3,085 objections were received due to the Covid lockdown. “The imposition of 0.13 per cent tax on residential buildings and the imposition of 0.5 per cent tax on vacant lands with no income were illegal,” they said.
