The subway has been beautified and access to important landmarks has been improved

Chennai: The renovated old Anna subway near Chennai Metro Rail’s Government Estate Underground Metro Station opened to the public as well as passengers on Wednesday.

Issuing a press release, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) said the renovation was done as part of multi-modal integration initiatives.

The old Anna subway, which is one of the biggest subways in Chennai, is located beneath the Arignar Anna Statue. It has been beautified with the surrounding Metro entry structures including ACP cladding, granite flooring, wall tiling, new lighting and designer GFRC jali works.

The subway will help commuters get a direct connectivity to the government estate underground metro station concourse level and it will provide a convenient access to the station from Wallajah Road, Ellis Road, Blacker’s Road and Anna Salai.

The subway also connects to the iconic Khadi Bhavan and Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Specialty Hospital at Omandurar. Adequate signages have also been installed at the entries and inside the subway to guide passengers to the metro station.
