Mayor fails to shake off inertia among officials

However, these meetings have done little to motivate officials and speed up the administration.

Bengaluru: In an attempt to increase efficiency among officials in the city administration city Mayor R. Sampath Raj has been holding on an average two to three council meetings as against one mandatory monthly council meeting.

However, these meetings have done little to motivate officials and speed up the administration. It appears that hardly 10 per cent of the council resolutions are being implemented in its true spirit!

The Mayor has already held 29 council meetings and will hold another five in the remaining two months of his term, as against 29 and 21 meetings held by his predecessors Manjunath Reddy and G. Padmavathy respectively.

Ironically, the council resolutions have been restricted to council itself.

Rs 2.32 cr spent on meetings
Each of the council member or corporator, including the nominated ones, will get a honorarium of Rs 400 per sitting. The expenses for a single council meeting, including the refreshments and lunch, would be Rs 8 lakh.

Hence under Sampath Raj’s tenure nearly Rs 2.32 crore has been spent on meetings.

MLAs, corporators at loggerheads
During many council meetings precious time was lost due to the lack of co-ordination between the MLAs and corporators, as latter alleged that MLAs were not cooperating in some constituencies.

Some of the unimplemented resolutions include levying hefty penalty against those who set fire to garbage, suspension of officials if they fail to close down flex printing units, appointing officials to solve water crisis and to collect parking fee, advertisement fee and OFC charges as per Mumbai model.
