Kerala: Uptick in Coir prices but labour on low wages

As exporters give lower prices for products of depots, it will derail the functioning of societies.

ALAPPUZHA; Coir Factory Thozhilali Union here has decided to launch an agitation demanding wage hike in the sector. T.R. Sivarajan, general secretary of the Union said that the workers have called for a strike next week as their wages were not being hiked despite coir prices being revised by the government. Alleging that the coir corporation, agencies of state government, were inept at handling concerns of workers, he said the Kerala State Coir Corporation Limited (KSCCL) was posing as scarecrow.

“While the government was trying to end depot system, the exporters are encouraging them. As exporters give lower prices for products of depots, it will derail the functioning of societies. With the arrival of private depots, international exporters began to depend on private parties ignoring the Coir Corporation resulting in the steady decrease of wages to coir workers,” he said, demanding immediate closure of private depots and good price for coir products.
