Chennai cops mull gag order as in Aarushi case
Chennai: The city police is seriously contemplating to approach the Madras High Court to obtain a gag order in the Swathi murder case as several media houses are 'flying kites' over the incident.
"We have taken cues from the sensational murder case of Aarushi Talwar in which the Supreme Court passed orders of restraint on newspapers and TV channels. We have been discussing about it for some time. We would soon take a decision on approaching the Court," quipped a police official.
The city police, who took over the case 72 hours after the murder initially probed by the Government Railway Police (GRP), found out in its research of reports that there were at least 40 angles thrown up by the media houses through presumptions.
Stories are being churned out one after the other by every form of media and Swathi became the most saleable idea in every form. The reach of Swathi's murder is so much that it saturated the social networking sites, flooding them with posts, most of them misleading.
A case in point is the castiest and communal flavoured repost by actor Y. G. Mahendran in his FB page, which added fuel to the controversy. The actor pulled the post down and apologised for posting the same, which he claimed to have forwarded as received. Political outfits including the fringe groups took on the government besides adding to sensationalism.
The crime grabbed so much attention that a minor who was stalked by a youth working in Koyambedu market dragged the Swathi case reference into a complaint claiming the stalker threatened her saying she would meet with the fate as Swathi. Investigations revealed that the youth did threaten her, but never mentioned anything about Swathi or the murder.
