Rowdy Ranga' attacks Bannerghatta elephant

The 35-year-old tusker, which had ventured into the park area on Saturday night, was seen fighting with the male captive elephant, Vanraj.

Bengaluru: ‘Rowdy Ranga'’ is on the rampage again. The wild elephant, which has a history of running riot, attacked and injured a captive elephant at the Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) on Sunday.

The 35-year-old tusker, which had ventured into the park area on Saturday night, was seen fighting with the male captive elephant, Vanraj.

“Vanraj is in mast (in heat, when male elephants are known to grow violent) and we had let him free. As Ranga charged at Vanraj on Sunday afternoon, our employees took control of the situation and chased away the wild elephant. No staff or visitor faced any problem because of this incident,” said Mr Santosh Kumar, Executive Director, BBP.

Vanraj has sustained minor injuries on his right leg and some scratches on its trunk. “Six rangers have been deployed to keep Rowdy Ranga away from the park on Sunday night,” Mr Kumar said.

Vanraj has been moved to the herbivore safari zone to keep it away from captive and wild elephants.
