Chennai: 25 kg gold seized by flying squad

The jewellery was handed over to Parthiban, assistant electoral officer of Alandur constituency.

Chennai: The flying squad, constituted to check movement of illegal cash and goods after the implementation of the model code of conduct, and the city police recovered 25 kg gold jewellery from a vehicle during joint checking of vehicles at GST Road in St Thomas Mount on Monday morning.

The jewellery was handed over to Parthiban, assistant electoral officer of Alandur constituency. Addressing the press, Parthiban said that the recovery was proof that the flying squads and police were working efficiently round the clock.

He said on Monday morning, the Alandur flying squad headed by officer Balasubramaniyan and the St.Thomas Mount police stopped a private vehicle and searched it and recovered the jewellery.

Parthiban said the consignment documents that the occupants of the vehicle were carrying did not matching with their statements. As per papers, the consignment was for Bengaluru whereas they said that the gold was to be delivered to a jeweller in Sowcarpet in the city. The vehicle number mentioned in the papers did not match with the vehicle carrying the consignment.

A case was registered with the St Thomas Mount police and the jewellery handed over to the Parthiban. Probe is on.
