Appoint public prosecutor immediately, HC to govt

HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to appoint a new public prosecutor in a series of criminal appeals pertaining to Lumbini Park and Gokul Chat bomb blasts that occurred in 2007. It may be recalled that the police arrayed eight persons as accused and filed a charge sheet against four of them. The trial court convicted Ismail Akbar Choudhary and Anil Shafique, to life imprisonment. They filed the present appeal against the trail court judgement. The public prosecutor informed the two-judge bench, comprising Justice P. Naveen Rao and Justice Juvvadi Sridevi, that the earlier special public prosecutor for the counter-intelligence cell was appointed as judge of the High Court and the government was yet to appoint a successor. The bench will hear the case on March 3.

BC Welfare Bhavan: HC notice to authorities

Justice J. Sreenivas Rao of the Telangana High Court on Wednesday ordered notices to the authorities in a writ petition challenging allotment of plots for construction of Backward Community Welfare Bhavan. The judge was dealing with a petition filed by Telangana Rasthra Kummari Sangham. The petitioner society was aggrieved by the action of the authorities in excluding it in the allotment list released for construction of the bhavans. The counsel for the petitioner contended that the three-acre land was first allotted to the petitioner society for construction of Aatma Gourava Bhavanam in Malkajgiri. Without assigning any reasons, the authorities reallotted the lands to other BC welfare societies by excluding the petitioner society. He further said that the foundation stones were being laid for construction of 41 other bhavans without considering the claim of petitioner. The court will hear the case on February 20.

Vegetable vendors entitled for compensation in vehicle accident cases: HC

The Telangana High Court ruled that even legal representatives of a vegetable vendor are entitled to monetary compensation in a vehicle accident case. Justice G. Anupama Chakravarthy pointed out that the Supreme Court had considered the income of vegetable vendors as Rs 6,500 per month in 2008. The judge was dealing with a motor vehicle accident appeal filed by Dasari Bharathamma and others. The MV accident claim tribunal at Ranga Reddy failed to consider a sum of Rs 10,000 on cattle business. The judge faulted the tribunal and ruled that the legal representatives were entitled to at least Rs 6,500 per month as loss of income and enhanced the compensation payable by Rs 1,09,000.

Accused in abetment to suicide case gets bail

Justice C. Sumalatha of the Telangana High Court on Wednesday granted bail in a case of abetment to suicide. The bail petition was filed by Kusuma Ramadevi, who is arrayed as one of the accused. It was alleged that one Suresh had borrowed Rs two lakh from the petitioner’s husband. Upon repeated requests, Suresh failed to respond. Feeling harassed, he died by suicide in December. It was observed that even while in the hospital, Suresh had not given any statement. The judge, after hearing the contentions, granted anticipatory bail to the petitioner.
