Udupi: A person who fell into a 15 ft pit when the earth around a borewell caved in was successfully rescued after a six-hour operation at Maravanthe in Udupi district of Karnataka.
The incident took place around 8.30 am Sunday when the soil surrounding the borewell caved in and the man, Rohith Kharve, was buried neck deep in the 15 feet crater.
The borewell labourers and local residents took up the basic rescue operation and informed the fire and health officials.
To ensure that the soil did not further cave-in, a drum was placed around Rohith and oxygen was supplied.
As soon as news of the incident spread, hundreds of people arrived to see the operation.
In addition to the rescue operation, police also had to concentrate on keeping the crowd away and ensure that the rescue operation was not affected. A parallel pit was dug with the help of an earth mover.
Around 2.30 pm, officials succeeded in lifting Rohith safely out of the pit with the help of a crane. Rohith was seen smiling with relief as soon as he was brought out. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital where a medical team had been kept ready for treatment.
Though Rohith did not sustain any major injury, he was provided basic treatment and drips....
