Youths condemn police action against director
Madurai: A group of youths condemned the Madurai city police for allegedly assaulting the film director Gowthaman, a staunch supporter of jallikattu, at Avaniyapuram on Saturday.
Gowthaman, along with jallikattu enthusiasts, had attended a protest meeting at Avaniyapuram where the first event of the bull-taming sport would be organised in Madurai every year before the apex court banned it.
Meanwhile, director Ameer, Yuvan Shankar Raj and Arya visited the venue to express their support to the protest. The protesters demanded that Arya leave the place stating that he was against the sport. As the crowd became restive, he left the venue. Other members of film fraternity spoke to Gowthaman in support of jallikattu before leaving Avaniyapuram.
However when the police demanded the protesters to disperse from the venue, they resisted which resulted in heated arguments. The police manhandled director Gowthaman while they arrested him. Jallikattu enthusiasts condemned the police for using force against the peaceful protesters and also for dragging the director to police van.
