Hyderabad: Disposal of garbage in open areas continues to be commonplace in several areas of the Secunderabad cantonment. While garbage is cleared from trash bins on alternate days, irresponsible disposal of waste in open areas and areas around the bins are making life difficult for the residents.
There is no door-to-door waste collection in densely populated areas like Karkhana Bazar, where residents complain of skin-related diseases due to garbage problems via flies and the mosquito menace. “Due to the foul smell from open waste, we are not able to freely move around or outside our homes. There is just one disposal point for close to 200 houses and the multiple restaurants in the area,” complained Latha, a homemaker.
Another resident, Hazra, who lives adjacent to the dumping area, said officials blamed it on shortage of collection vehicles. Not even a trash bin was provided despite complaints for years.
Godishela Ramesh, a social worker in Gandhi Nagar, said households dump garbage on the roadside despite the presence of a trash bin a few metres away. The irresponsible dumping by households is only adding to the inaction of authorities, he said, pointing to the multiple dumping spots on the roadside.
The same is the situation in Trimulgherry village and Sikh village, where abandoned vacant plots are turned into trash dumps. As a result, straying of animals and accumulation of plastic waste are adding to the woes of the residents, despite clearing of garbage from the bins.
