Bengaluru Church Street to miss New Year date

With nearly 80 percent of the work done, Church Street will open to public next February.

BENGALURU: Church Street, which was closed for remodeling, had missed many deadlines in the past and may miss the New Year one too.

With nearly 80 percent of the work done, Church Street will only be thrown open to public next February.

Shanthinagar MLA N.A. Haris, who inspected the ongoing works on Thursday, said, "This is the first time in India we are using cobblestones to construct a road. It is a highly challenging job. Only after the workers started digging the road we found out there were 26 high tension cables passing under the road. Shifting them was no easy task and it resulted in delay," Mr Haris said.

He requested public to bear with the inconvenience as the hand crafted road with Kasuti pattern, a rare one will be ready by January end.

Architect Naresh Narasimhan said the project was delayed as they found old sewer lines, high intensity electric cables, broken water pipelines and storm water drain beneath the road.

"The road will bear Kasuti pattern, which requires craftsmen and not just workers. And I’m sure that this road is future proved for the next 50 years," he added
The MLA said that the on the street there will be facility for handicapped parking, car parking and two wheeler parking with a broader footpath. The road will be decorated with LED lights along with flower pots and plants. There will also be music systems on the street, where the passerby can groove with the music.
A BBMP official said the stretch of road from Brigade Road till Vasudev Adigas hotel will be ready before Dec 31, so a carnival can be held for New Year's Eve.
