National Library Week starts

Vijayawada: The National Library Week celebrations here began with an event at the Tagore Memorial District Library on Tuesday.

District collector Dilli Rao paid rich tributes to Jawaharlal Nehru, Rabindranath Tagore and Ayyanki Venkata Ramanayya. He said National Library Day is organised to mark the services of SR Ranganathan, father of library science in India, on his birth anniversary. Libraries had played a vital role in instilling the spirit of Independence among the public during the Freedom movement, he noted.

District library organisation chairperson Jamala Purnamma said the Week would be observed till Nov 20. A Children's Day was organised on Nov 14, book fairs would be held on Nov 15, and leaders of the Freedom movement commemorated on Nov 16.

On November 17, poets’ gatherings and seminars will be held and on Nov 18, a painting personality quiz and essay competition held for students. On November 19, women will be made aware of Women's Empowerment, and on Nov 20, a mass reading programme by the students will be held.
