Thiruvananthapuram: Students learn policing on a day-out with cops

Children got an idea of crime investigation, forensics lab, nuances of policing and how police stations function

Thiruvananthapuram: In an attempt to create a new generation of children who are not scared of police, they took some 80 students of various schools for a demonstration trip around police facilities on Children’s Day on Monday. “Can I tap into the police wireless network and listen to your communications,” a curious young boy asked during a 40-minute interaction with cops. They explained to him how it became harder after wireless networks turned digital.

The children got an idea of crime investigation, forensics lab, nuances of policing and how the police stations function and a glimpse of arms and ammunitions. They were apprised about the duties of police officers and their rights as citizens. They got a bird’s eye view of the city through the control room that monitors visuals CCTV cameras deployed across the city capture. They also got to ride on police stallions at the mounted police facility.

“We got to interact with police canines including Julie and Stephy. There are different dogs to sniff bombs and sniff drugs. We were told that the horse that took us on a ride was one of their most peaceful,” said a student, Arun Kumar. State police chief Loknath Behra gave tips on measures to be taken when children face difficult situations. IG Manoj Abraham inaugurated the session at Pattom Girls High school. Girl children kept on asking questions to officers on eve-teasing and ATM frauds. DCP G. Siva Vikram answered the questions at commissioner’s office. DCP Thampi S. Durgadutt held a special session on drug abuse.
