Participation in meet ideological: Kanimozhi
Chennai: DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi on Monday termed her party’s participation in VCK’s conference against uniform civil code along with the People’s Welfare Alliance parties an ideological alliance against Hindutuva and not an electoral alliance.
“This is not an electoral alliance but an ideological alliance against Hindutuva forces,” she said addressing a conference against uniform civil code organised by VCK here sharing dais with the MDMK, Left parties and her party’s allies Congress, MMK and SDPI.
Pointing to VCK’s eagerness to participate in the DMK called all-party meeting on Cauvery issue last month, Ms Kanimozhi said, “When you (VCK) invited, we all came here. But you couldn’t come due to some constraints.
“As soon as your invite reached our party, Kalaignar (DMK chief M. Karunanidhi) and Thalapathi (Stalin) ordered me to participate in the meeting.”
She said DMK chief was first to oppose the uniform civil code when he union minister wrote to the law Commission in July this year.
Echoing Kanimozhi’s view, TNCC president Su Thirunavukarasar said this ideological alliance was not aimed at electoral politics. “We will continue to work together even after polls for welfare of people,” he said.
VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan said that all parties took part in the conference leaving out their political differences. “BJP government at the Centre has taken up the uniform civil code for its political gains,” he accused. Senior CPI leader R. Nallakannu and MDMK president Prof M. H. Jawahirullah also spoke.
MDMK deputy general secretary Mallai C. Sathya said that his party was steadfast in opposing the uniform civil code even though it has aligned with the BJP in the past. CPI (M)’s former Harur MLA P. Dillibabu said that his party was in favour of scrapping triple talaq.
