Kerala: Teacher suspended for injuring student

The police said they attempted to contact the parents several times, but to no avail.

KOLLAM: A 10-year-old child has allegedly sustained an injury on his left hand from his teacher's punishment for “impolite” behaviour in the classroom. Syed Ali, son of Siraj, studying in Standard V of the Valathungal HSS here suffered the injury on Thursday and the incident was kept undercover. The physical education teacher D. Sheeja, who allegedly punished the boy by “twisting” his hand, was suspended by the Kollam deputy director of education (DDE).

The teacher has given an explanation for her act that she just made the boy sit on his bench who was caught running around the classroom by holding his hand.
But the boy said he just bent down to take his pen that had fallen from the bench, and the teacher took it wrong and punished instantaneously by twisting the left hand. “I got a report from the school head on Friday, based on which I suspended the teacher," Kollam DDE K.S. Sreekala told DC.

"The parents have demanded intervention to get them compensation from the teacher, which I refused. The child who was restless in the class was made to sit on his bench by the teacher which led to the incident." The police said they attempted to contact the parents several times, but to no avail. They have also not given any complaint. The Human Rights Commission has registered a suo-moto case. The Commission member K. Mohankumar sought a report from the education department and Kollam SP.
