Kalpathy festival rolls on

At the Ratholsavam this year there was a renovated chariot on the second day.

KOCHI: The world famous ‘Devarathasangamam’ at Kalpathy will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. On day two of the world famous chariot fest on Monday, the ‘devarathams’ (chariots carrying idols), were drawn through the roads of Kalpathy Agraharam by devotees. The coming together of gods (Devarathasang-ama) on five different chariots will be held on the premises of Kasi Visalakshi Viswanathaswamy Temple. At the Ratholsavam this year there was a renovated chariot on the second day. Out of the four temples taking part in the fest, Mandakkara Maha Ganapathi Temple, renovated its 300-years-old chariot with the help of artists from Tamil Nadu.

The renovated chariot had six wheels and was 25 ft high and was taken out on procession by devotees. “The reason why we renovated the chariot is because several wooden sculptures of gods and goddesses embedded on it had faded over three centuries and now the artists are making new ones on the renovated ‘ratham’ using chariot wood (venga),” one of the chief organizers of the fest, Karimpuzha Raman, said. As many as 25 artists from Palakkad and Tamil Nadu worked on the chariot for four months and it was the connoisseur of all eyes at the procession on day two at Kalpathy.
