CPM, MDMK want Tamil Nadu to be declared drought-hit
Chennai: People’s Welfare Alliance Front constituents CPI (M) and MDMK on Monday demanded the state government to declare the state as drought hit and provide compensation to the farmers.
In a resolution adopted at the party’s three day plenum held at Tirunelveli on Monday, CPI (M) announced that it would stage a road roko in front of the Central and state government offices protesting against implementation of neo liberal policies and to declare the state as drought hit and provide compensation to farmers.
Stating that the state has been reeling under severe drought following the monsoon failure and Karnataka’s adamant stand against releasing Cauvery water, the Marxist party said that paddy, sugarcane and other crops cultivated in lakhs of acres of land are in danger of failing.
It condemned the Centre for not implementing the Supreme Court direction to form Cauvery Management Board and siding with Karnataka government.
Condemning the anti people economic policies of the centre and the state, failure to control price rise of essential commodities and seeking to the create new employment opportunities, the CPI (M) would stage statewide road roko on December 20 and sought public support for the protest.
MDMK general secretary Vaiko demanded the state government to provide a compensation of Rs 30,000 per acre for crop loss and to write off all the loans taken from cooperative, nationalised and private banks. He also sought adequate compensation to farm labourers who have lost their jobs.
