Amid cash crunch, mining baron throws lavish wedding, raises eyebrows
Bengaluru: At a time when the entire nation is dealing with cash crunch, Karnataka's mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy is gearing up to put on a gala show for his daughter Brahmani's big fat wedding.
Brahmani’s wedding with Rajeev Reddy was recently in the news for reportedly having Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif roped in to perform at the reception on November 16.
The wedding is scheduled to be held at Bangalore Palace grounds.
The wedding extravaganza will include 40 bullock carts that will be used for ferrying guests from the entrance to the wedding hall. And not just this -- the wedding venue also comprises of musicians, flower elephants and giant balloons -- all with the images of the Reddys.
A source close to Reddys said that the wedding will be witnessed by around 50,000 invitees, including VIPs. About 3,000 security guards will be put in place for the safety and convenience of the guests.
One of the most influential men in the state, the 49-year-old Reddy was a former minister in the BJP government led by BS Yeddyurappa until July 2011, and spent three years behind bars in connection with illegal mining. He was released last year on bail.
He and his older brother G Karunakara Reddy were ministers in the BJP government headed by BS Yeddyurappa till July 2011. Reddy was later arrested by the CBI.
The wedding seems least affected by demonitisation, unlike most other Indian weddings that have taken a big hit.
Earlier last month, Brahmani's extravagant wedding invitation took the internet by a storm. The invitation, which came in a box, opens to reveal an LCD screen, which announces the marriage details.
Indian marriages are known for the extravagant delicacies but caterers too are facing order cancellation. With Rs 500 and Rs 1000 losing their value, people are not willing to take these notes as getting them exchanged is too troublesome.
