HYDERABAD: Sunday Funday at the historic Charminar will commence from October 17 as Ek Shaam Charminar Ke Naam..., tweeted principal secretary (Urban Development) Arvind Kumar on Thursday.
“Arrangements are being made for a traffic-free and pedestrian-friendly programme,” the top official said on his account following a meeting with Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, city police commissioner Anjani Kumar and Malakpet MLA Ahmed Balala.
Like Tank Bund, vehicular traffic to and from Charminar will not be allowed. People can freely walk, children can cycle and play; while witnessing musicals, dancing and laser shows.
GHMC will have a major task on its hands in terms of cleaning the streets, making arrangements for people to walk, as the area has a large number of hawkers near precincts of the monument. Vendors will have to be cleared, so that people can take a walk.
Old City folks are wondering how traffic will be diverted. There is always heavy traffic congestion at Mir Alam Mandi, Nayapul and City College. But many others are excited about the initiative, wondering whether the pedestrian walkway will be from Madina to Charminar Bus Stand....
