Kerala: Search on for three missing fishermen

Body of boat capsize victim handed over to relatives.

KOZHIKODE The body of Antony, 39, son of Savior, a native of Chinnathurai, Kanyakumari, was handed over to the relatives on Saturday. His father Savior, along with another fisherman, Karthik, was rescued by another fishing boat Govind on Thursday. Mr Antony drowned about 50 nautical miles off Beypore coast when Immanuel, a fishing boat from Munambam, Kochi, capsized in deep sea on Wednesday. The boat was hit reportedly by a ship resulting in the capsize. Three fishermen are still missing. The diving experts from navy are still on with a search in the area where the mishap occurred for the missing three.

The fishing boat Queen Mary carrying the body fished out by Navy divers the previous evening arrived at the Beypore port in the wee hours of Saturday. The missing fishermen were from Poovar near Thiruvananthapuram and Chinnathurai near Kanyakumari. Meanwhile, the mercantile marine department (MMD) launched an inquiry into the accident. The MMD regional surveyor, Suresh Nair, reached Beypore and recorded the statement of survivors Mr Karthik and Mr Savior. The MMD is also collecting details of ships passed through the location in the international waters.

Fisheries minister, J. Mercykkutti Amma, told reporters at Beypore that the director general of shipping would investigate about the hit-and-run ship. As per the available information, three ships heading for Sri Lanka, Gujarat and Mumbai had crossed the area at the time of the accident. Meanwhile, the ship CGS Abhinav is still on with the search operations for the missing in the sea.
