College Trust hands over Rs 2 lakh each to girls' kin
Chennai: A day after the death of three girls, Pachaiyappa’s Trust which runs Chellammal Women’s College in Guindy handed over a cheque for Rs 2 lakh each to victims’ families.
Meanwhile, the government authorities reviewed the safety aspects and transport authorities made sure all the buses stopped in front of the college on Friday as demanded by teachers and students.
Pachaiyappa’s Trustees and Chellammal Women’s College principal visited the families. “Our trustees handed over cheques for Rs 2 lakh each to the three families. Today the buses stopped in front of our college. The transport authorities promised to the consider our demand for special buses,” said V.G. Vijayalakshmi, principal of the college. “The authorities also promised us to put a traffic signal in front of our college,” she said.
Even as the MTC authorities installed signboard informing that all local buses will stop at the college bus stop, the Chennai metro water authorities called on for an urgent meeting with the contract workers operating water tankers in the city.
Metro Water Tankers Association president P.S. Sundaram after participating in the meeting said, “Metro water authorities enquired about the safety machinery in place by the contractors operating 500 odd water tankers in the city.”
Expressing concern about the deaths, metro water Managing Director Vikram Kapoor advised the contractors to use only qualified drivers and latest vehicles. He cancelled the contract of water tanker which caused the accident.
He also warned that the contract would be cancelled if the vehicle records and maintenance are not up to the satisfactory level. The City Police arrested on Friday the cleaner of the water tanker lorry. Mayakannan (24), a native of Virudhunagar, was sitting in the cabin when the accident occurred. The lorry driver Rajendran aka Raja, also from Virudhunagar, was arrested on Thursday itself.
