Telangana top cop lauds lake police for saving lives
HYDERABAD: The lake police reportedly prevented 285 suicides so far this year, according to city police commissioner Anjani Kumar, who appreciated and felicitated the team by giving mementos on Saturday. As many as 15 people were saved in the last one week alone, officials said, adding that 13 persons died in the lake this year.
The lake police intensified surveillance on the public who came with an intention of committing suicide by jumping in Hussain Sagar, said Anjani Kumar, adding that they were working on making the lake area tourist-friendly, vices-free and crime-free. In August alone so far, the lake police have saved 23 human lives.
Officials said the people came from faraway places in cabs and other means of transport to commit suicide as it was easily accessible to them. “We have had cases wherein the victims come even from the outskirts to jump and kill themselves. We have identified two to three hotspots around the lake where we noticed most of the cases and kept a tight vigil on those places,” officials said, adding that they had deployed one constable every half kilometre who kept a close watch on people coming near the lake.
Local vendors alert officials when they spot people sitting at one place for a long time or moving dangerously close to the lake. “We stepped up patrolling during night time because this is the time when people succeed in their attempts. The Lake Police also counsels rescued people and tells them by ending their lives they are creating more problems for their near and dear ones. Sometimes, we counsel them to live a full life given by God and fight to overcome problems and oftentimes we send them over to the Bharosa centres for better counselling and guidance,” said an official.
Anjani Kumar appreciated and felicitated the staff by giving mementos to Lake police inspector B. Dhanalaxmi, const
