Police step up vigil at Kunjalumoodu
Thiruvananthapuram: The city police on Sunday deployed forces at Kunjalumoodu after political parties tried to cash in on the murder of a 32-year-old murder accused at Vandannoor a day earlier. Suresh, 32, of Thamalam was allegedly mowed down by a car and then hacked to death at Vandannor by a four member in retaliation. He was the second accused in the murder of friend turned foe Binu at Poojapura in 2013.
Suresh who was allegedly involved with the sand mafia had joined the CPM after deserting the BJP camp. On the other hand, the four assailants which included two relatives of Binu were BJP workers. As a result, the CPM organised a protest meeting at Kunjalumoodu. An intelligence report said that Binu’s relatives were preparing to join hands against this protest leading to force deployment.
Meanwhile, Maranallor police recorded the arrest of one of the assailants, Gireesh ,who was held by a CRPF jawan while attempting to flee after the murder. He confessed to police that the four member gang had planned the attack and therefore had come in a car.
“The car belonged to Arun of Thamalam, one of the accused. Suresh who was released on bail in the case had gone into hiding at his cousin’s house as he feared for his life. However the gang traced his location and arrived here with a plan to murder him. We are closer to arresting the other accused,” said a senior police officer. “Most of the accused also were sand mafia members whereas Suresh used to seize the vehicles from the owners who failed to pay the intrest to loan sharks,” he added.
