Kozhikode: Too fast, too dangerous
KOZHIKODE: The unending incidents of traffic violations are forcing the traffic police to be tougher on city roads. On Friday alone, special checking was carried out on important roads in the city, including Rajaji road and Puthiyara, from where buses take a deviation to distant places. As many as 20 drivers were sent to classes, after they were found overspeeding and driving rashly. The police are also checking for drivers who drink and drive .
As per the data available with the Traffic department, 11 deaths were recorded in the city limits in the last month. Of those, 10 were from collisions. A total of 71 cases were registered where the victims suffered grievous injuries. Over speeding was found to be one of the major reasons for road accidents in the city. Officials stressed that enforcement was the only answer to control speeding.
Statistics available with the traffic police shows that of 763 road accidents that took place this year till the month June, 313 accidents were caused due to over speeding. The data points out that nearly 41 percent of total accidents have taken place in the city this year due to over speeding. The statistics also show that strict action has been taken against over speeding vehicles that are caught on CCTV cameras installed at various signals in the city limits.
