Cops to file case against T P Senkumar

However, Mr Senkumar had written to the magazine's editor that he was misquoted in the interview.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state police has decided to register a case against former state police chief T.P. Senkumar for allegedly triggering communal unrest. The case will be registered at the cyber police station here by invoking various sections including 153 A of Indian Penal Code for promoting enmity among various sections, an offence that could attract up to five years imprisonment. Director general of prosecutions C. Sreedharan Nair gave a legal opinion to ADGP (crimes) Nithin Agarwal that a case could be registered. Based on that Mr Nithin Agarwal directed the Cyber police to register a case, police sources said.

State police chief Loknath Behera had earlier ordered a probe by Mr Agarwal into a set of petitions alleging that the contents of an interview given by Mr Senkumar to a magazine amounted to triggering communal tension. However, Mr Senkumar had written to the magazine’s editor that he was misquoted in the interview. Hence the Mr Agarwal sought legal opinion on proceeding further. In the interview, Mr Senkumar had stated that of the every 100 children born in Kerala, 42 were Muslims.

He suggested that the birth rate was high considering that the Muslim population in the state was 27 per cent. According to him the birth rate among Hindus who constitute 54 per cent of the population, was less than 48 per cent and the birth rate among 19.5 per cent Christians was 15 per cent. He spoke about the demographic shift that the state might witness in future. Besides, he had also referred to the presence of ‘Love Jihad’ in the state. Mr Senkumar refuted the allegations saying that his remarks were twisted. It is learnt that the magazine may also be booked.
