KOZHIKODE: Calicut University recently launched a one-year-long Green Campus project covering over 400 affiliated colleges and thousands of students to convert campuses into green, eco-friendly spaces as part of its golden jubilee celebrations, scheduled to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister this month end. Involving the public also into its fold of environmental conservation activities, Calicut University is launching a course on organic farming. The course conducted through its Lifelong learning department can be opted for by the public without any age barriers.
The course is a six month certificate programme with the co-operation of Nature’s Signature Foundation. The Foundation is already conducting the course in Mahatma Gandhi University and already 10 batches have passed out successfully. “The representatives of the Foundation have already discussed the conduct of the course and we have asked them to submit a detailed proposal so that we can proceed with it,” said Lifelong Learning and Extension Department Head Dr E M Manogem.
She added that the University wanted to start the course in the Golden jubilee year itself. “The course is intended not just to promote organic farming, but to create awareness about the ecological aspect of the subject,” Dr Manogem said. Calicut University Vice Chancellor Dr K Mohammed Basheer said that the course would help the public to better understand the environment and provide a proper model for organic farming. “Our aim is to get involved with the public and provide them possible help and opportunities which in turn help in the progress of society. We have decided to launch the programme in principle and will take steps accordingly,” he added.
